MASTERCRAFT BUILDER GROUP CREATES BATH SPACE FOR PALM COAST FAMILY
ST. AUGUSTINE, Florida (August 30, 2024) – MasterCraft Builder Group (MCBG) is known for shaping communities as a home builder and developer. However, unless its services are needed, one may not be aware of its dedicated Restoration Division. It helps homeowners recover from devastating losses caused by storms, natural disasters, fire, floods, and more as well as remodels existing single family homes. Recently, the team stepped forward to complete a unique project resulting from a chance encounter between Chris Shee, Founder and CEO of MCBG, and Kate, Dusten, and Kate’s daughter Skyla, at a Make-A-Wish event. The team designed and built a custom, accessible shower in their Palm Coast home for Skyla, who is living with Rhett’s Syndrome, which has caused her to be non-ambulatory and non-verbal. The project has been a true blessing for everyone involved.
“Chris reached out to me and said he felt a calling to help this family in need. He asked if our restoration division would take on this special project,” says Leigh Johnson, Vice President of Restoration for MCBG. “I drove down to Palm Coast, met the family, and immediately felt what Chris did. I called Chris after meeting the family and said, ‘We are going to make this happen!’ They were so lovely and caring. I met Skyla, and we discussed their needs and how to best use the space. After designing the shower and creating an estimate and scope of work, Chris called the family to let them know he would be covering all of the costs. It’s a moment I won’t forget. Chris inspires me to stop and take time to help others, and I’m eternally grateful for this project and blessed to work with one of the most generous people I know, Chris Shee, who is always giving back to our community.”
Kate, Dusten, and Dawn, Dusten’s mother, had been bathing Skyla in a small, low-profile bath, making bathtime stressful for Skyla and physically challenging for her caretakers. The new shower space is large enough to accommodate a reclining shower chair, a full bench, and her family members as it takes at least two people to bathe Skyla. Leigh designed the space with wide doorways and no curbs so Skyla’s wheelchair could move freely. MCBG staff Todd Kennedy and Gavin Napier, who spearheaded the on-site work, even surprised the family with a Wi-Fi enabled speaker with special lights to soothe Skylar, who is sensitive to harsh lights. Now, she can listen to classical music or her favorite Mickey Mouse Clubhouse tunes while looking at the purple led lights as purple is her favorite color. The new shower is so calming that Skyla has been relaxing and even falling asleep during her shower, resulting in a smoother bedtime routine and better sleep for everyone. The project was completed with the generosity of: Moen, Daltile, Schluter, Florida Home Store, Element Electric LLC, Rolland Reash Plumbing, Turner’s Custom Showers, Ronovations, Cirilo Painting Inc., and A1 Stone World Inc.
“People tend to take the simple things for granted,” says Kate, Skyla’s mother. “Skyla has taught us so much about appreciating everything we have. And we’re so humbled to receive such a wonderful gift that has improved the daily quality of our lives – we now look forward to bathtime and don’t have to worry about the logistics of dealing with a small, impractical bath. Chris, Leigh, Gavin, and Todd were so great to work with; they’re part of our family now.”
